Mobula tarapacana in Ambrosio, Santa Maria, Azores

The inspiration behind the name Ghosts of The Ocean, the ideas, the mission, is in no small part thanks to a French movie, Le Grand Bleu directed by Luc Besson. The movie stayed with me my whole life. Its one I’ve watched again and again, in good times and bad. There is something that made me fall in love with the ocean, despite living no-where close to the coast as a child. I like to think it had something to do with our eventual decision to move to the Azores.

“You go down to the bottom of the sea, where the water isn’t even blue anymore, where the sky is only a memory, and you float there, in the silence. And you stay there, and you decide, that you’ll die for them. Only then do they start coming out. They come, and they greet you, and they judge the love you have for them. If it’s sincere, if it’s pure, they’ll be with you, and take you away forever.”
